The Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Fire is the first of the four astrological elements, and its three signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Tradition describes them as bold, warm and quick to begin things. This guide walks through each fire sign, explains how they differ from one another, and shows how a name's sound can lean toward fire. As with all astrology, these descriptions are symbolic and are not a measured fact about anyone.

What fire means in astrology

Of the four elements, fire is the one linked with energy, spirit and the wish to act. Old astrology books pair it with the heat of summer and with the will to start something. When people say that someone has a fiery temperament, they mean quick enthusiasm and a readiness to speak up, and that is also what the tradition has in mind.

Fire signs are said to get along easily with each other and with the air signs, since air feeds a flame. They are said to find the water signs harder, since water puts fire out, though in practice any pairing of signs can work.

Aries: the first sign

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and its season begins at the spring equinox, around March 21. Its symbol is the ram, and its traditional ruling planet is Mars. Aries is a cardinal sign, which means it starts things, and it is usually described as direct, competitive and eager to lead.

The common cautions in the tradition are impatience and a short temper. The common praise is courage and a refusal to wait for permission. A person with an Aries Sun is often given words such as pioneer, initiator and spark.

Leo: the fixed flame

Leo follows Cancer and covers roughly July 23 to August 22. Its symbol is the lion, and it is ruled by the Sun itself, the only sign with that distinction. Leo is a fixed sign, which means it holds on, and it is described as loyal, generous and warm, with a love of being seen.

Where Aries starts a fire, Leo keeps one burning. The traditional cautions are pride and a need for praise, and the traditional gifts are warmth, creativity and a sense of ceremony. A Leo Sun is often described as the one who makes a gathering feel like an occasion.

Sagittarius: the mutable fire

Sagittarius covers roughly November 22 to December 21. Its symbol is the archer, a centaur aiming an arrow, and its traditional ruler is Jupiter, the planet of expansion. Sagittarius is a mutable sign, which means it adapts and moves on, and it is described as curious, optimistic and fond of travel and big ideas.

If Aries is the spark and Leo the steady flame, Sagittarius is the fire that spreads. The tradition warns of restlessness and bluntness, and praises honesty and an openness to the new. A Sagittarius Sun is usually given words such as explorer, philosopher and free spirit.

Cardinal, fixed and mutable

The three fire signs show the three modalities at their clearest. Cardinal Aries begins, fixed Leo sustains, and mutable Sagittarius changes. Each of the other three elements repeats the same pattern, so every sign is a combination of one element and one modality.

This is why two fire signs can feel so unlike each other. They share an element, but they spend it in different ways, and knowing the modality gives a more specific picture than the element alone.

Names that lean toward fire

On NamesByStars, the astrological element of a name is read from its sound. Sharp, voiceless stops such as K, T and P, and the bright open vowels of words like father, cat and my, are counted as fire. Short names also lean toward fire, since a one-syllable name has a crisp, quick sound.

Among the names on the site, John, Jack, Luke, Thomas, Robert, Wyatt, Parker, Blake, Cooper and Kate all come out as fire by sound. The list is long, and it contains many classic names. You can see the exact reading for any of them on its name page.

Using this when you choose a name

If your Sun, Moon or rising sign is a fire sign, a fire-sounding name is a direct match, and the site will rank those names higher. If you would like balance instead, names of a friendly element, which for fire means air, are described as a lively partnership.

Whatever the ranking says, the real test is how the name feels when you say it. A fire sign that loves a soft, flowing name should follow that feeling, and the ranking should be treated as a prompt for ideas, not as a rule.
