Moon Sign and Rising Sign: What They Add to Your Sun Sign

Most people know their Sun sign, but astrologers say that two other placements tell you at least as much: the Moon sign and the rising sign. They are harder to find because they depend on the time of birth, and that is why so many people have never looked them up. This guide explains what each one is, how it is worked out and how NamesByStars uses them.

A quick reminder about the Sun sign

The Sun sign is the sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. Because the Sun takes about a month to cross each sign, it depends only on the date. It is read as your core identity, the way you shine and the things you need in order to feel like yourself.

The Moon and the rising sign move much faster, which makes them more personal. Two people born in the same week share a Sun sign, but they may have quite different Moons and rising signs.

How the Moon sign is found

The Moon travels around the zodiac in about twenty-seven and a third days, so it spends roughly two and a half days in each sign. To find your Moon sign, you need to know where the Moon was on your birth date, which is a matter of astronomy and not of a table of dates. A calculator uses the real position of the Moon at the moment of birth.

The birth time matters because the Moon can change signs during a day. If the Moon stayed in one sign for the whole of your birth date, the sign is certain even without a time. If it crossed from one sign to the next that day, the time is needed to know which side of the line you were born on.

How the Moon sign is read

In astrology, the Moon stands for feeling, habit and the need for security. It is often described as the inner self, the part of you that comes out when you are tired, at home or among people you trust. A fire Moon is said to react quickly, an earth Moon to seek calm routines, an air Moon to talk things through and a water Moon to feel everything deeply.

Astrologers often say that the Sun is what you are becoming and the Moon is what you already are. That is a poetic way of putting it, not a finding, but many people enjoy the contrast between their two signs.

How the rising sign is found

The rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn within twenty-four hours, so each sign is on the horizon for about two hours. That is why the rising sign changes quickly and needs a precise birth time.

It also needs the place of birth. The angle of the horizon depends on latitude and longitude, so the same moment gives different rising signs in different cities. A calculator needs the birth time and the city to find it.

How the rising sign is read

The rising sign is read as the first impression you give and the style with which you meet new situations. A person with a fire rising sign may seem bold on first meeting, one with an earth rising sign may seem calm and careful, one with an air rising sign chatty and curious, and one with a water rising sign reserved and observant.

It is also the starting point of the whole chart. The twelve houses, which divide the chart into areas of life such as home, work and relationships, are counted from the rising sign. We do not use houses on this site, since our aim is a name list and not a full reading.

How the three work together

The Sun, Moon and rising sign are sometimes called the big three. Reading them together gives a more rounded picture than any one alone. A person with a fire Sun, an earth Moon and an air rising sign might be described as bold in purpose, careful in private and chatty on arrival.

On NamesByStars, each of the three has an element, and they carry different weights: the Sun counts most, followed by the Moon and the rising sign. A name's sound is then compared with the mix of elements in your chart, and names that match it rank higher.

What happens when the time is not known

When you do not know your birth time, the site says so and uses only what is certain. The Sun sign is always known from the date. The Moon sign is used when it can be determined, and the rising sign is left out, since it cannot be guessed. A shorter chart gives a less specific list, and the site tells you that too.

If you can find the time on a birth certificate or hospital record, it is worth adding, since it unlocks the other two placements.
